“A conditioned space means raising the symmetry of the physical vacuum’s electromagnetic state.”
Nature’s Symmetries
Sometimes, deep insights into the working of nature are not the result of simply coming up with new equations, whether you are Dirac or Einstein. Instead, breakthroughs can come in realizing that things that appear different are, in fact, the same. Symmetry is important to understanding the significance of Tiller’s “space-conditioning” and how that fits into the bridge. This section is a bit like a sightseeing tour of a vast and fascinating science.
Symmetry in this context means that something can be arranged in two different ways but nonetheless appear the same. If you take a square and turn it 90 degrees, it looks the same after the change as it did before the change. Reflect the square in a mirror, and again, the square looks the same. Translate (slide) it sideways without rotating, and the square looks the same. All these maneuvers—rotation, reflection, translation, lead to an invariance of the configurations of the square. The collection of all possible configurations is called a “group.” Group theory is the mathematical language of symmetry.196 A familiar type of symmetry is present in our own bodies. Specifically, the left and right halves of the human body are mirror images of each other, creating a two-sided or “bilateral” symmetry.
Crystallography was one of the first areas of science to benefit from group theory. Tiller is a world expert crystallographer. He has a deep working knowledge of the different types of crystals by considering the symmetries of the crystal’s atomic lattice. Sodium chloride (ordinary table salt) forms an extremely regular cubic lattice. Diamonds and quartz are crystals that can be cut in a way that exactly divides two adjacent planes of atoms, often giving rise to spectacular optical clarity.
How do we know what the fundamental symmetries of space are? All directions in space appear to us to be equivalent. The laws of physics don’t know the difference between up and down, forward and backward, or sideways. Space has fields generated by subatomic particles, such as electron fields formed by electrons, Higgs boson fields formed by Higgs bosons, and so on. Gauge theory is a mathematical theory used to describe subatomic particles and their associated wave fields. Gauge symmetry is the observation that you can redefine the fields or particles in terms of each other in such a way that the laws remain the same. This is called “gauge invariance” and gives the theory a certain symmetry.197
Mathematician Ian Stewart, in his book Why Beauty Is Truth: A History of Symmetry, illustrates the last point, defining fields and particles in terms of each other, with the so-called “currency rule.”198
Suppose that you (particle) are traveling in another country, let’s call it Duplicatia, and you need money. The Duplicatian currency is the “drueble” and the exchange rate is two druebles to the dollar. You notice a simple and obvious rule for translating dollars into druebles. Namely, everything costs twice as many druebles as you would expect to pay in dollars.
